Enables charitable assets to support qualified contributions to Trump Accounts
CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- National Philanthropic Trust (NPT), one of the nation's largest public charities and a leading independent sponsor of donor-advised funds (DAFs), and the J.P. Morgan Charitable Giving Fund program today announced that, at the request of a donor, it worked with the Treasury Department to offer a new pathway enabling DAF donors to support qualified contributions to Trump Accounts, leveraging philanthropic capital to help young people build assets for their futures.

Entrepreneur, investor, and Indiana native Brad Gerstner recently announced that the Brad Gerstner Family Foundation, a DAF in the J.P. Morgan Charitable Giving Fund program at National Philanthropic Trust, would contribute $250 to Trump Accounts for Hoosier kids born in 2023 and 2024 who reside in Indiana ZIP codes with a median family income of $150,000 or less.
Mr. Gerstner is the founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital and widely recognized as a key architect of Trump Accounts, which were introduced and written into law as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). These Indiana Trump Accounts will reach over 140,000 children and give Indiana families a running start on the new tax-advantaged savings accounts. An Indiana native, Mr. Gerstner was inspired to give back to the place where he grew up.
"NPT's mission is to help donors transform ambitious ideas and capital and we are delighted to help Mr. Gerstner turn his intentions into impact," said Holly Welch Stubbing, CEO of National Philanthropic Trust. "Sometimes new ideas require creating a path that did not previously exist, as was the case here. Our team brought together the legal, tax, philanthropic, and operational expertise needed to quickly translate a generous donor's idea of making a positive difference for underserved children in Indiana into a workable solution. We hope that Mr. Gerstner's vision and our blueprint can serve as a model for donors in every state."
Trump Accounts were established under federal law as tax-advantaged investment accounts for children. Federal rules permit qualified general funding contributions from nonprofit organizations for defined classes of eligible beneficiaries, in addition to contributions from individuals, employers and government entities. The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have determined that general funding contributions to Trump Accounts, including as distributions from a DAF, are considered to further a charitable purpose.
"Donors are increasingly looking for scalable, responsible ways to put philanthropic capital to work," said BJ Goergen, Global Head of Private Advisory at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. "This new framework is an exciting example of how philanthropy is evolving. It helps unlock a new way for charitable capital to support long-term opportunity for children and families."
NPT's team examined how the provisions of the law and program intersect with the requirements governing donor-advised funds and provided a framework designed to enable DAF distributions to benefit an eligible class of children.
"Together with Brad Gerstner and his team, we worked to understand and build a new pathway that can be used by DAFs to seed accounts for qualified children in Indiana," said Gil Nusbaum, Chief Administrative and Legal Officer at National Philanthropic Trust. "Ultimately, NPT worked to provide the right framework so this donor and other donors can successfully achieve their charitable goals."
This work builds on NPT's 30 years of developing philanthropic solutions for donors with ambitious charitable goals, including facilitating gifts of complex assets and other sophisticated giving strategies. This expert use of a DAF extends that approach to a newly created savings vehicle and provides a model for other donors interested in similar initiatives.
NPT views such approaches as complementary to traditional non-profit grantmaking. NPT donors continue to support tens of thousands of nonprofit organizations across a broad range of causes in the United States and around the world.
"Donors are increasingly looking for different ways to put philanthropic capital to work," Stubbing said. "Our role is to bring the expertise necessary to determine whether and how those ideas can be accomplished responsibly while continuing to support the vital work of the nonprofit sector."
About Donor-Advised Funds
